💨🙋What is Hortatory Exposition? and how is it different from analytical exposition?

Hortatory Exposition is a type of persuasive text or spoken material in English that is used to explain the reader or listener that something should not or should be done. Just like Analytical Exposition texts, this type of text is also very popular among academics and can be found in scientific books, journals, magazines, newspaper articles, academic speeches, and so on.

This type of text is indeed very identical to the Analytical Exposition text, but there are different purposes in these two texts. If the Analytical Exposition text aims to make the reader or listener aware of an issue, this text aims to force the reader or listener to agree with what is conveyed. In addition, there are differences in the structure of the text to distinguish the two types of text.

💁Hortatory Exposition Features:

There are several characteristics of this text, namely:

  • Is a persuasive text accompanied by supporting reasons.
  • Using Simple Present Tense
  • Using conjunctions such as first, second, third, next, furthermore, additionally and so on.
  • Contains recommendations that usually begin with: in my opinion, it is better…, for these reasons, should…, I think… should…, and so on.

Generic Structure of Hortatory Exposition💮

  • Thesis
Contains the opinion of the author or speaker regarding the topic in question.

  • Arguments
Arguments contain opinions that support the main idea. The more opinions that are written, the more interesting a Hortatory Exposition Text is because the reader or listener tends to believe in an event if there are many supporting opinions in it.

  • Recommendation
Unlike the Analytical Exposition text which has a Conclusion, this text has a recommendation section for the reader as the closing of the text. Recommendations contain suggestions addressed to readers regarding related topics discussed in the text.
